
Spider-Man 3 lived up to the box office hype, taking in an estimated $148 million in its opening weekend, for an incredible $34,807 per screen average.
The web slinger shattered the record held by the second installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
To further illustrate the scope of the opening, the film took in $1 million less in its first two days than Blades of Glory has taken during its entire North American run.
As expected, Spider-Man 3 knocked Disturbia out of the No. 1 spot on the box office charts. The film landed at No. 2 after taking in $5.72 million in its fourth week of release. The $20-million film has taken in $59.883 million since its release.
Fracture rose from No. 4 to No. 3 after capturing $3.42 million in ticket sales this weekend. The film has grossed $26.453 million in its first three weeks of release. The Invisible drops from No. 2 to No. 4 on ticket sales of $3.125 million. The film has taken in $12.346 million in two weeks of release.
Rounding out the top five is Next, which dropped from No. 2 on sales of $2.768 million, for a two-week total of $11.835 million.
The week’s other new wide release, Lucky You, took in $2.515 million this weekend and landed at No. 6. The combination of Spider-Man’s box-office dominance and weak reviews resulted in a dreadful $996 per screen average.
Four new films opened in limited release, led by Waitress, which captured $91,500 on four screens for a strong $22,875 per screen average. The film has taken in $111,000 since its Wednesday (May 2) release. Civic Duty took in $63,100 on 56 screens for an average of $1,126 per screen.
Lionsgate Films’ Away from Her grossed $56,000 on four screens, for an impressive average of $14,000 per screen. Paris, je t’aime took in $37,800 on two screens for a per screen average of $18,900.
